Black & White Photograph, 1968-71

Archival pigment print on cotton rag paper, signed by Angus O’Callaghan

In East Meets West Angus has captured the very rare sight of a visiting Geisha examining the local fashions of Collins Street in the 1960’s. This image led to the “discovery” of Angus’s work in 2009 by Ben Albrecht: “One image immediately grabbed my attention; a black & white photograph of a Japanese woman in full kimono dress looking into a shop window. On closer inspection I could see the image was not taken in Japan… the shop window was boring… while the cigarette butt on the pavement was something you would not see on the ground in a Japanese city…” [Angus O’Callaghan, Melbourne, p 26].
