Royal Arcade - signed by the artist
Colour Photograph, 1968-71
Archival pigment print on cotton rag paper, signed by Angus O’Callaghan
This image of Melbourne’s Royal Arcade building captures a moment in time and a cultural transition from the conservative 50’s through the swinging 60’s. A young woman in a red mini skirt strides confidently down the iconic hall past several older women wearing floral hats, gloves and full-length overcoats. Gazing down the corridor, overseen by the mythical giants Gog & Magog, we are transported to another time and place, evoking feelings of childhood nostalgia for this famous Melbourne landmark.
