Milk Bar - signed by the artist

from $1,450.00

Colour Photograph, 1968-71

Archival pigment print on cotton rag paper, signed by Angus O’Callaghan

Milk Bar is one of Angus O’Callaghan’s best known and most loved works. It depicts one of Melbourne’s archetypal milk bars on what was then a quiet, single-carriageway Nepean Highway in Brighton. It showcases both Angus’s interest in composition, with a focus on strong geometric lines and bold colours, and his ability to capture a fleeting moment. The newspaper placards announce “moon seems clean” and “moon men are fit”, signalling technological advance and an age of fascination with space exploration. The image is bookended with two by-standing male protagonists whose intent, and relationship, if any, we are invited to ponder.
