Colour Photograph, 1968-71

Archival pigment print on cotton rag paper, signed by Angus O’Callaghan Colour Photograph, 1968-71.

One of Angus’s most famous works, New Arrivals is set at Station Pier, the gateway for generations of immigrants arriving in Melbourne in search of a new life. Angus has captured the curiosity, uncertainty and anxiety of people arriving and heading abroad at a time when international travel was a big deal, often taking weeks on the water, and air travel too expensive for most. It was traditional for friends and family, dressed for the occasion, to farewell loved ones whom they knew they would not see again for some time, by throwing colourful streamers, each holding different ends, commemorating their separation as the paper tore when the ship departed.
